It is amazing what medical advances have done in our family. I never dreamed of having a child that could not hear anything. But I am seeing more and more how I am thankful that God gave her to our family. I have learned in the last few days how much we take for granted. With all of our other children, I just talked to them, and they learned. With Mariah it is different. We have to have talk and talk and talk some more. For Mackie that is not a problem, but for the rest of us, we get tired of repeating and repeating and repeating this to Mariah. However this week is has paid off. Mariah is now responding to her name. She has also learned what "Kitty Kitty" is. When we say her name from the kitchen when she is in the living room, she will turn her head to see who is calling her name. This morning I was upstairs leaning over the rails calling her name. Mariah was sitting on the bottom step, and I started calling her name. This was a little mean because she has not learned to localize sounds up and down (usually we do not have to do that). But she was looking all over to see where her name was coming from. It was so cool, and we got a kick out of it.
Here are a few pictures from therapy yesterday. We were learning the "pop" "pop" sound....

David loves to be outside, so it is no surprise when he brings in things. On this day, he was amazed with the caterpillars!! I thought it would be fun to see what Mariah thought about them. I think her face speaks for itself!

Incredible Day

I have to admit you will notice that I will blog a lot more this week than most weeks. Mark is in Honduras for 8 days, so I try to update everyday so Mark can see what we have been doing. When he is gone, we try to plan our school field trips, to give us a little something to do rather than being in the house all day. Today we decided to go to Discovery place. Because we are memebers of the Nature Center in NC we are able to go there free. So, we started out this morning, yes all of us....5 kids. Really it is not that bad taking all of them out. They know how they are to behave when in public. We went to a couple of shows and got to pet a few weird creatures. After a long morning, I could tell Mariah was getting hungry. So, we went to the place on site to eat. I guess I could not read signs because I went in the out way. But....a really cool thing happened. It was defiently a God thing!!!! I was walking with my crew, and I heard my name called out. I tured to see a friend Michelle. Well, this is just not my ordinary friend, we have a very special bond. About this time last year Michelle and I met in Asheville to introduce ourselves in person. We had written on email for many months. I met her to see her little miracle boy Benjamin. Long story medium length, Benjamin is from Guatemala, and had the same foster mother that Mariah had. Honestly when I saw the two of them together, it was almost more than my heart could take. I thought I was really going to loose it in front of everyone eating. Little Benjamin was SO precious to Mariah (see photos below). Now I have to mention that Michelle does not live even close to Charlotte for us to run in to each other. I know God just put us together today! I needed it. Who would have thought two little ones that are from a different country that was raised for several months by a very precious lady, would run into each other in Charlotte. This was our little Discovery today!! What a blessing.

Surgery Tomorrow

Tomorrow (Tues. Feb 26th) is Mariahs surgery. She is going to be implanted bilaterally with Cochlear Freedom Implants. This is a much bigger blessing than I had realized. There have only been 5 bilateral implants done here at Chapel Hill. Our doctor said that they choose who should get them wisely. So, I know we have made a good decision by going forward with this. It does not make it easier to hand over your little one to someone else for six hours. And also knowing her life will never be the same after tomorrow. I know for her, it will be a great change, and one that will be incredible to walk right beside her, and watch her progress.
Please pray for her if you think about it. I will try to update tomorrow night depending on how things are going here. We will be released from the hospital after the surgery, but will stay here in Chapel Hill until Wed. morning.
Blessings
Amy
Learning to walk

At our house right now, we are trying to get Mariah to walk on her own. She can walk with all her walker toys, and with our fingers, but she is only taking about three steps on her own. Each day she is making progress though. I have heard that the surgery she is having can throw off her balance a little, so we were trying to get her walking before the surgery, so it would not be soooo hard learning it over. Madison gave us a profound statement the other night. She told us that her teacher at church said "you can't run before you walk". Ok, maybe she is learning something. No, Mariah was not running, but we kept saying she is trying to run because of how excited she gets about walking. So, just remember, you have to walk before you run!
Just my luck

Mariah decided that she would like to go exploring this day. She had not opened any of our cabinet doors until this day. When she did, I think her eyes lit up. Her favorite game is to throw things down, or away from her, and then you put them back, then she throws them.....well you get the point. I think she thought if she cleaned out the cabinet, we would continue the game. Well, this day we did not. Since then, she loves to get in the cabinets. I have not gotten the child locks yet because it does entertain her for a long time, and hey, what does it hurt. Yes, for those of you thinking what about the cabinet with all the cleaning stuff in it.....well, I don't let her get in that one.
Enjoy.....

I just love this messed up hair picture. Mariah has so much hair, especially on the top of her head. There are some days when she wakes up that we just get a good laugh. That is what we did this day.
This morning Madison, Mariah and myself were up early to head to Chapel Hill. I love our audiologist, so I was so excited about seeing her. I on the other hand was not excited about the drive! Today we had another hearing test done. We all basically knew the results, but it is just protocal and we are just doing what we are told. We were told the same thing....she can't hear. They do think that she is aware that there is sound out in the world now. There is a possibility that she can pick up on some sounds. So, it was the same thing we had heard before. The best thing she can have at this point is the coclear implant.
Our next appt is Jan 28th. Mark and myself will meet with the implant team, and discuss all options that are out there with implants. We pray for wisdom, and peace during this whole process.
Today was a good day.....we are all just really tired from the trip. Never figured out why you get so tired from just driving, but by 8:30 tonight I was ready to crash. So, now 3 hours later.....I am off to bed.
So What's up with the Moore Family

I do promise to do better on the blogging end of my life. Not like I don't have anything else going on, but I do want to document our lives, and what better way to do it. I like to have pictures, and neat things to add to my blog, and since I have had a crazy computer that had to be returned to the store, I had not blogged in awhile. So, now I have a new computer....which I think also has some crazy problems with it, but I will deal with it, and blog on.
Many things are going on with the Moore fam. Tomorrow January 8 we head back to Chapel Hill. We will be going for a hearing aid check-up. Some people have asked why are you going when they really are not helping her hear. Well, we are going because they told us to, and I am following directions. This road we are on, with the cochlear implants is not one that I have traveled before. So, like any good woman would do, I am just following the directions that others give me. It seems to be working in my favor up to this point.
Today, I signed David and Madison up for gymnastics. David is SO excited, and he really do great for his new class. The head coach which is from Russia, told me he was like a lighting bolt. I told him that is why I am handing him over to have some structure activities, to get some of that energy out. Madison was pushed to her limit tonight and finally broke. They were seeing if she could be on the "team" but she is one level shy of being able to do that. I have to say though I was SO impressed with this gym. The are putting out Olympic material (no I am not sending my kids to the olympics by any means) but they are making the girls confident, and giving them goals to work toward. I am excited for both of them. David is also playing basketball, I think he would do every sport if we had unlimited funds, and unlimited time! He loves to just be moving.
Mackie, David and Daniel are active in the High 5 sports program in our church. Mackie cheers for Daniels team (anyone that knows her....just pray she does not break anything......they want her to do the stunts for the showcase weekend). Daniel seems to have gotten the concept of basketball better this year, and he is enjoying his team. David....well, if he is running, he is loving life, so needless to say he like basketball. I will post pictures later, when I find out what card Mark put them on.
Well, that is a nutshell of what is going on in the Moore house outside of Homeschool, normal life. Here is a snapshot taken this morning as the big kids were doing school, and the twins were trying to keep Mariah from getting in the toilet, pulling everything off the tables, or eating anything in site.....even the dog food. I think Mark gave Mackie $1.00 today because they played so good with her. More updates tomorrow, I promise.
